Greetings RISD Alumni,
RISD has embarked on an academic year that is nothing like what we remember. Students, faculty and staff in Providence—as well as alumni around the world in their own communities—are pulling together for both a return to school and a continued exploration of how we rely on each other. We continue to rise to today’s challenges together.
The RISD Alumni Association is also looking ahead. Next June 3-6, 2021, we are planning a reunion weekend that will (we hope) allow us to come together in person. Mark your calendars, contact your classmates, and plan to come back to Providence to catch up—and to celebrate this year’s RISD Alumni Association award winners. We have an especially exciting group of honorees this year:
- Kara Walker MFA 94 PT/PR will be awarded the Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf Award, the highest award offered by the RISD Alumni Association. Walker is known for her candid investigations of race, gender, history, sexuality and violence in exhibitions worldwide.
- Jon Key 13 GD is the recipient of the Emerging Leader Award. As the creator of Codify Art, Key is dedicated to creating, producing, supporting and showcasing work by artists of color—particularly women, queer and trans artists of color.
- Rodolphe el-Khoury BArch 86 will receive the Art and Design Educator Award. el-Khoury leads RAD-UM, a Miami School of Architecture research lab investigating embedded technology and robotics for enhancing responsiveness and resilience in buildings and smart cities.
- Lina Sergie Attar MArch 01 is this year’s RISD Serves Award winner. Attar runs Karam Foundation, a nonprofit organization that invests in young Syrian refugees and their communities through innovative education and leadership development.
Expect more reminders about reunion programming throughout the coming year. And remember you can always keep us updated on your activities and accomplishments through the RISD alumni website.
Sincerely,
Donald Choi BArch 82 P 07 President RISD Alumni Association
