Dear Alumni
Although beloved spaces such as the RISD Museum and Tillinghast Place remain closed to the public, we look forward to the possibility of a return to in-person activities in the coming months. Despite having to adapt to many unexpected and abrupt changes, our RISD community continues to shine. Faculty and students are meeting the challenges presented by new teaching and learning methods. Our Alumni Clubs and Affinity Groups are embracing online and hybrid programs to expand engagement, as alumni unable to attend in-person events now have the opportunity to join us virtually from across the globe.
As we continue to embrace positive change, I am excited to share that my fellow RISD Club of Hong Kong co-founder Rex Wong BArch 03 will become the new RISD Alumni Association President on July 1, 2021. It has been an honor to serve as your president for the past three years. Please join me in welcoming and supporting Rex as he leads our work going forward.
Finally, I would like to say thank you to RISD alumni for working so diligently to strengthen our community and support our students. As I have been saying for a long time, “RISD stands for the Reason I Still Dream.”
Sincerely,
Donald Choi BArch 82 P 07 President RISD Alumni Association

Honoring alumni |
As Commencement 2021 approaches, we look forward to recognizing alumni who have manifested RISD’s core values and positively impacted their communities. While we were unable to celebrate the 2020 Alumni Awardees Kara Walker MFA 94 PT/PR, Jon Key 13 GD, Rodolphe el-Khoury BArch 86 and Lina Sergie Attar MArch 01 in-person, they have graciously accepted the honor and offered thoughts on how RISD has had an impact on their work. |

Updating a core teaching facility |
A generous $4 million gift jumpstarts the highest priority renovation in RISD’s Campus Master Plan. The iconic Jesse Metcalf Building is located in the heart of campus and houses a third of the college’s departments—Ceramics, Furniture Design, Glass, Jewelry + Metalsmithing, Sculpture and Textiles. Metcalf supports the deep connections between art, design and industrial production, a founding mission of the institution. |

Documenting RISD student activism |
Starting in Fall 2021 a fully-funded graduate research assistantship will support ongoing research and discovery to document past activism at RISD. This is a key part of a wider initiative begun by risdARC to preserve and amplify RISD’s history of student activism, including recent Black- and BIPOC-led movements. We encourage all alumni to share their work and contribute to this important project. |

Back to campus |
RISD is currently planning for two possible scenarios for Fall 2021. Encouraged by positive trends in vaccinations the college is hopeful for a “nearly normal” fall semester with a “vaccine failure” option in place. Decisions continue to be guided by community health and safety, academic integrity, and financial viability. |
