Please join me in welcoming the Class of 2021! We were thrilled to celebrate your many accomplishments on June 5 with a virtual program and in-person degree conferral under a tent on South Water Street. I encourage all alumni to connect with each other through the programs offered by the Alumni Association, like the RISD Network, and mark your calendars now for RISD Commencement + Reunion Weekend coming in June 2022!
Along with the exciting changes for our newly graduated students, the RISD community also faces another change—RISD President Rosanne Somerson retires at the end of this month. In a recent letter, Board of Trustees Chair, Michael Spalter reflected on President Somerson’s many achievements over her six-year tenure. We sincerely thank President Somerson for her dedication and service to RISD and we look forward to working with her as President Emerita in the years to come.
During my service as the Alumni Association President—and especially over this past year—the creativity, resilience and perseverance of RISD’s alumni, students, faculty and staff have humbled and amazed me. During this period of rapid change, I am reminded of the words shared at Commencement from Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and honorary degree recipient Lynn Nottage, “...a bumpy road is where discoveries are made.” I am hopeful that the discovery and growth that we have made, individually and universally, will continue to inspire our creativity, help us lead with empathy and embrace a new world grounded in the strength of our community.
Sincerely,
Donald Choi BArch 82 P 07 President RISD Alumni Association

Commemorating Juneteenth |
Now an official holiday at RISD, Juneteenth is a time of celebration and reflection as we commemorate one of the most momentous events in American history—the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, TX. Recognition of this event is a key part of RISD’s commitment to being an anti-racist, equitable and inclusive institution. |
