Dear Friend,
We are midway through the spring semester at RISD and the campus is alive with activity. Students are hard at work in their studios and a sense of anticipation is in the air as we prepare to welcome President-Elect Crystal Williams on April 1. Just a few days ago, both in Providence and around the globe, our community celebrated Founders Day, the 145th anniversary of RISD’s founding, with events and days of service from Chicago to Beijing. It makes me wonder if the founders could have imagined, back in 1877, the worldwide impact their gift would have. Today, the RISD alumni community is truly global.
When I began my term as president of the RISD Alumni Association in July, I shared my vision of activating our global community, highlighting the work of our alumni volunteers that live outside of the US, and connecting alumni efforts with family global engagement efforts whenever possible.
I’m happy to share that we’ve made progress on all of those fronts:
- We appointed a dedicated staff member focused on global engagement for alumni and families. We have launched clubs in Canada and Italy with additional clubs being developed.
- Our global clubs have expanded their membership to include regionally based families and have jointly produced families-oriented programming including Summer Welcomes and upcoming spring receptions for newly admitted students.
- We have recruited global alumni to serve on the Alumni Association Leadership Council and its committees.
- We have recognized the essential work of our global alumni through the Alumni Association Awards.
In addition to connecting and creating opportunities globally, members of the Alumni Association have been fortunate to spend time on campus, getting to know students and welcoming them to join the Alumni Association Leadership Council. We participated in Orientation and Move-in Weekend activities and hosted a gathering for students staying on campus over winter break. We look forward to creating even more connections with students and alumni over Commencement + Reunion Weekend!
I look forward to working with you all to build on our successes as we continue to strengthen and grow. I encourage you to follow @RISDAlumni this April as we launch a new series profiling the work of our volunteers and celebrate all they do for our creative community.

Since 1971, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) funding has helped the RISD Museum open its collections to researchers and the public through fellowship programs, exhibitions and preservation projects. Most recently an NEH grant helped in the digitization of the Lucy Truman Aldrich collection of Asian textile masterworks.
