Dear RISD Alumni,
RISD in the fall is one of my favorite memories. The excitement of new beginnings as new students join our community and begin to explore new spaces, creative paths and experiences. This year, I was honored to return to campus and participate in another new beginning, Inauguration Weekend, welcoming President Crystal Williams on behalf of our over 31,000 alumni living in 125 countries across the globe. In my remarks, I shared one of the most significant themes from your responses to our 2022 Alumni Survey—RISD is a beloved and powerful place that fuels us as we imagine futures together.
I encourage you to read President Williams’ Inaugural Address. She spoke of the themes she hopes will set the stage for RISD’s next 150 years: Amplify, Evolve, Cultivate, Engage and Connect. Although I hope you will take a moment to watch for yourself, I want to close with a brief excerpt that I believe responds to our collective desire to deepen and strengthen the relationship between RISD and our alumni community.
“When I arrived here in April, I quickly learned that one of RISD’s distinctive characteristics is that we long to connect, to form meaningful, strategic alliances with each other. Alums want to be connected to students. Students want and need to be connected to alums. Parents want to connect with the school. Departments want to find points of overlap. To us, our interconnections and interdependencies, our communities, are elemental. So over the next years we will focus energy on developing means by which our multiple communities can further cohere in service of amplifying, cultivating, evolving, engaging and connecting.”
The Alumni Association is excited to work closely with President Williams and RISD to connect and engage with our global community. Keep an eye out for the announcement of our 2022 Alumni Survey findings, new programs like Alumni Labs and upcoming regional and international events throughout the year here in our newsletter, on the website and social media.
Sincerely,

Rex Wong BArch 03 President RISD Alumni Association
