Dear RISD Alumni,

We are halfway through December, the fall semester is officially over, and campus activity (and temperatures) are cooling down. Like so many, this time of year makes me pause and reflect on the past year. There has been so much for our community to celebrate. We welcomed our new President, Crystal Williams. RISD launched an MFA in Illustration, a two-year advanced studio program focusing on critical perspectives, artistic voice and visual literacy in the public realm. Tavares Strachan 03 GL became the eleventh alumni honored with a MacArthur “Genius” Award. Anna Weyant 17 PT and Urvi Sharma 17 FD became the latest alumni recognized in Forbes “30 under 30”. After several years apart, reunions returned to campus and our global community enjoyed many opportunities to gather and spend time with each other.

Now, as the clock counts down on 2022, I am looking ahead to the new year with anticipation. As a member of the Class of 2003, the coming year marks a milestone in my relationship with RISD—my 20-year reunion. Many of us celebrating reunions this year have already received the Reunion Weekend save-the-date postcard in the mail. I hope I will see you on campus this June and ask you to consider becoming a reunion volunteer to make your class reunion a truly memorable experience.

As your RISD Alumni Association president, one of my greatest joys is watching our community grow stronger each year. Our collective energy, vision and creative spirit are a true source of inspiration. I look forward to continuing our journey together in the new year!

Alumni Association Awards

Do you know alumni who exemplify the RISD spirit and positively impact their profession or community? Nominate them for an Alumni Association Award! Nominations are open through January 23.

RISD Limited Editions

RISD Limited Editions 2022 launched on November 28 with new prints from acclaimed alumni artists Shahzia Sikander MFA 95 PT/PR and Huma Bhabha 85 PR. These limited-run offset lithographs are now available through Pace Prints.

Project Open Door Students Explore Jewelry Making

This fall, local high school students participated in Project Open Door’s Saturday Portfolio Program. Facilitated by Teaching + Learning in Art + Design, the students spent weekends sawing, sanding, hammering and torching metal in the college’s Jewelry + Metalsmithing studio spaces.

Save the Date: MLK Keynote Lecture

January 18, 2023

This year’s speech honoring the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. will be presented by Thelma Golden, director and chief curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem.
